Day 15. Rwanda – Musaza Lot 1
At Rwamatamu, quality begins with meticulous care at the washing station. Cherries are hand-sorted to remove underripes and defects, then pulped in small batches, with equipment thoroughly cleaned between each grade to keep lots distinct. After a controlled fermentation of 8 to 12 hours, the coffee is fully washed and dried slowly on raised beds for up to 25 days. Every step is designed to preserve clarity and express the influence of altitude and terroir. The result is a cup that is bright, clean, and balanced, with structure and depth shaped by methodical processing and Rwanda’s cool, steady climate.
This Red Bourbon lot is grown at 1,600–2,000 metres in the volcanic soils surrounding Lake Kivu, where cherries from Rwamatamu’s 20-hectare estate are combined with harvests from smallholders and affiliated cooperatives. Founded in 2015, Rwamatamu Coffee Ltd. is a family-owned business run by Mukantwaza Laetitia and Rutaganda Gaston, who bring over 13 years of experience to the venture. Their mission is not only to produce exceptional coffee, but also to combat rural poverty through sustainable farming and community development.
Nestled in the rolling hills of Rwanda’s Nyamasheke District, the farm and washing station overlook the stunning expanse of Lake Kivu. The tropical highland climate, with temperatures between 14°C and 24°C and regular rainfall, creates ideal conditions for Arabica coffee. Fertile volcanic soil at high altitudes produces dense, hard beans with exceptional flavour. Coffees are fully washed with fresh spring water, sun-dried, and handpicked to meet the highest standards. Rwamatamu is also working toward organic and fair-trade certifications, reinforcing its commitment to both quality and sustainability.
Beyond the cup, Rwamatamu prioritises positive social and economic impact, particularly by empowering women. Around 80% of the workforce is female, and the company works closely with local cooperatives to create steady income opportunities, invest in employee growth, and strengthen farming communities.
As an African-focused green coffee company, Rwamatamu is built on long-term relationships and real impact. Their approach prioritises trust over transactions, ensuring producers remain at the heart of the story while connecting roasters with exceptional coffee and the people who make it possible.
