Day 17. Zambia - Natural Marsellesa AB
This natural-processed lot comes from Mount Sunzu, a pioneering farm in northern Zambia near the country’s highest peak. Founded in 2018 by Swiss entrepreneurs Luca Costa, Fridolin Stocker, and Yanik Costa, the project was built on a simple but ambitious vision: to produce exceptional coffee while creating a climate-positive farm model that delivers lasting benefits for both people and the environment.
Of the farm’s 780 hectares, 115 are planted with coffee, while more than 600 hectares are being actively reforested with native Miombo woodland. Biodiversity is further supported through projects like beekeeping, and the farm is powered by solar irrigation systems, reducing its carbon footprint while sustaining long-term productivity.
Cherries for this lot were selectively handpicked, floated to remove defects, and dried slowly for 30 days on raised African beds. Carefully shielded from rain and overnight moisture, the coffee develops depth and complexity before being hulled, graded, hand-winnowed, and sorted at Mount Sunzu’s own dry mill. This vertically integrated approach ensures quality control from tree to export.
Beyond the coffee, Mount Sunzu invests deeply in its community. The farm provides fair, year-round employment for more than 120 local staff, in addition to seasonal work. Employees receive pensions, health insurance, and accident cover, while infrastructure projects — including an 8 km road network and future plans for clean water and solar access — create long-term impact for surrounding villages.
