👨‍🌾 The Story Behind the Coffee

This coffee comes from the Ituze Women’s Cooperative in Ngamba, Rwanda. Ituze means calmness in Kinyarwanda, chosen to reflect the stability and sense of peace the group set out to create for themselves and their families.

The cooperative began in 2008 when 18 women, many of them widows, came together to support one another and build a more secure future. What started as friendship and mutual aid soon developed into a small scale farming enterprise, with members growing coffee and pineapples while steadily improving quality and yields.

In 2018, the group received support from the Kahawatu Foundation, gaining access to coffee seedlings, shade trees, compost and hands on training. This support helped the cooperative expand its activities and income streams. Today, with more than 20 members, the group earns income from specialty coffee, pineapples, handmade soap and a community savings group that supports healthcare, education, livestock purchases and home improvements.

Coffee remains at the heart of what they do. Cherries are carefully handpicked and delivered to the Ngamba washing station where they are floated to remove defects, pulped and fermented for 10 to 12 hours. After washing, the coffee is dried slowly on raised beds for up to 30 days. This careful approach results in a clean, elegant cup with clarity and depth, scoring 86 points and showcasing bright citrus, soft stone fruit, a buttery texture and a rich chocolate finish.

The Ituze women are supported by RWACOF, Sucafina’s operation in Rwanda, alongside its sustainability partner the Kahawatu Foundation. Together they invest in farmer training, yield improvements, soil health programmes, seedling nurseries and gender equality initiatives. Additional programmes provide access to loans, farm inputs and literacy training, while also helping farmers diversify income through non coffee crops. Environmental initiatives include improved waste management, reduced carbon emissions and solar installations at washing stations.

From the hills of Ngamba to your cup, this coffee represents more than flavour alone. It’s a reflection of resilience, collaboration and the long term impact of women working together to shape their future.
