Day 20. India - Ratnagiri Estate AB

Ratnagiri Estate – Pearl Mountain Coffee

The name Ratnagiri translates to “Pearl Mountain” in Hindi — a fitting tribute to the dense silver oak canopy that crowns this remarkable estate. Established in 1920 and family-owned for generations, Ratnagiri Estate is now led by Ashok Patre, a pioneering producer who blends tradition with cutting-edge processing to showcase the true potential of Indian coffee.

This lot is composed of Cavery and Catuai varieties, selectively harvested and meticulously processed. The cherries undergo a 36-hour aerobic fermentation, followed by a 16-hour clean water soak, before being patio-dried for 12 days. Ashok’s progressive approach includes Brix level testing, experimental natural and honey processes, and innovative fermentation techniques, all alongside traditional washed methods. The result is a coffee that is both complex and refined — a testament to craftsmanship and terroir.

Ratnagiri is organically and biodynamically farmed, with Rainforest Alliance certification. Regular soil testing, organic amendments, ionic seawater, and seaweed extract are used to strengthen plant health and enhance fruit sugar levels. Sustainability is at the core of the estate’s philosophy, ensuring that every harvest reflects both quality and environmental stewardship.

Nestled in the biodiverse hills of Karnataka, India’s largest coffee-growing state, the estate thrives under a three-tiered shade system that shelters the coffee with layers of native trees. This habitat is alive with wildlife, from over 48 bird species to monkeys, leopards, wild boars, mongoose, and even elephants and tigers. Ratnagiri Estate is more than a coffee farm — it is a sanctuary where agriculture and ecology coexist in harmony.

For six consecutive seasons, Ratnagiri Estate coffees have ranked among the finest in India, consistently impressing on the cupping table. With a balance of bright acidity, layered sweetness, and elegant depth, they reflect both India’s rich coffee heritage and its exciting future in specialty production.

Every cup tells a story. Our coffees are sourced from passionate farmers around the world, roasted with care in Buckinghamshire, and delivered fresh to your home. Treat yourself to something special, or share the gift of great coffee
