Day 1. Costa Rica – Finca Casa De Piedra
From the heart of Costa Rica’s renowned Tarrazú region, this microlot from Café Directo showcases the best of high-altitude coffee. Grown at 1,800 masl by father and daughter team Gerardo and Jennifer Arias, the farm combines over 30 years of expertise with a deep commitment to sustainability, traceability, and ethical practices.
Finca Casa de Piedra, one of Café Directo’s two family-run farms, is dedicated to producing, processing, and marketing the finest Costa Rican specialty coffees in harmony with the environment. Thanks to its unique microclimate and volcanic soil, the farm cultivates prized varietals including Catuai, Pacamara, and Gesha, all processed with meticulous care through natural, honey (yellow, red, and black), anaerobic, semi-washed, and fully washed methods.
Costa Rica is recognized as one of the most advanced coffee-producing countries in Central America, with innovation, technical knowledge, and diverse micro-climates driving its global reputation. The nation’s eight growing regions Guanacaste, West Valley, Turrialba, Valle Central, Tres Ríos, Brunca, Orosí, and Tarrazú each bring distinct character to the cup. In Tarrazú, cool nights, fertile soils, and high elevations create coffees of exceptional clarity, sweetness, and vibrant acidity.
Costa Rica is also a pioneer in micro-mill processing, which has transformed the specialty coffee landscape. Once reliant on cooperative mills, today’s smallholders operate boutique micro-mills, tailoring processing methods to highlight the unique qualities of each lot. This innovation allows for single-farm traceability, meeting the demands of a growing specialty market while empowering small and mid-sized producers.
Despite challenges such as unpredictable weather and long dry seasons, Costa Rican farmers and the government have embraced strict environmental protections, ensuring both quality and sustainability remain at the forefront of production.
For home roasters and coffee professionals alike, Café Directo’s Tarrazú microlot offers full transparency, environmental responsibility, and extraordinary flavor. With its balance of tradition and innovation, it represents the very best of Costa Rica’s specialty coffee heritage.
